Red Bank is an academy school, offering students the chance to focus their studies in a particular field. Much like a college major, students must take a certain number of courses related to their chosen academy - in Red Bank's case, at least half of a student's elective credits must be from courses within their academy.
Presently, RBHS offers six academies from which students may choose:
- The Leadership Academy
- The Teaching Academy
- The Health Sciences Academy
- The Communications Academy
- The Math, Science, & Technology Academy
- The Humanities & Fine Arts Academy
Each academy offers a different selection of courses, and certain courses offer college credit. Guest lectures, career-related field trips, and extracurricular activities help to round out the knowledge and experience gained in all of the classes. During their final year of study, students complete a senior project related to their academy.
Incoming freshmen are placed into the Ninth Grade Academy, which is designed to help students transition into high school. Toward the end of the academic year, each student will choose which academy they would like to join. Beginning in their sophomore year, they will begin to take classes related to their chosen field of study.
Our academies and teachers consistently win awards from national organizations, including our Teaching Academy which was named the National Career Academy of the Year by the National Career Academy Coalition in 2006.
After the academy program was implemented, Red Bank's graduation rate increased from 66% in 2003, to 72% in 2007. In addition, the percentage of students completing ninth grade successfully and moving on to tenth rose from 75% in 2003, to 90% in 2007.
